It is useful to try to teach how different settings and expectations call for different genres and styles/approaches in writing.
And yes, if we are not versed in the &quot;language,&quot; how can we tell what is correct or not? interesting.

		<description>Hi, Kevin -- Thanks for posting this.  There&#039;s some interesting data here, and I&#039;m going to check out the report.  I&#039;d agree with the reporter&#039;s assessment about IM language.  I have two student&#039;s whose writing is clearly &quot;Sidekick Speak&quot; ... and was, at first, virtually unreadable for their square, over-the-hill instructor!  Helping them see that they will need to write in a more traditional way in certain settings is a real challenge.  It&#039;s also challenging to figure out which things I&#039;m seeing are IM-talk and which are just plain old spelling/writing errors!
