LOVE LOVE LOVE this book. I am reading it to third graders. I was amazed at their comments. First, literal and then as they began listening to each other they were more thoughtful. We also listened to it read aloud while showing the first few pages from a website and the kids were all ears. I look forward to more comments. I’d love to see some comments from 6th graders to compare. Enjoyed the post.

You say that “poetry is about exploration and questions.” Have your students tried writing question poems? I just stumbled across the form in Arts and Learning by Merryl Goldberg. Here’s a sample from the book:

QUESTIONS

What do raindrops do after they hit the ground?
Do raindrops have a life?
Why do raindrops go only one way?
Do raindrops miss the ocean?
Does the sun make water disappear?
Why are rocks hard?

Every kid can ask questions, so every kid can write question poems!

I’ve had kids shout out, while I’m reading it aloud, “That was me!”

I love this book. The first time I read, I think I teared up. Creech does an awesome job of speaking in a little boy’s voice and it really touched me. Have you used Koch’s Rose, Where Did You Get That Red? with your kids? I always thought if I taught elementary school or middle school, that would be my go-to book for poetry with kids.
