Technology is not the solution (good teaching is), but to ignore it as part of an overall view of literacy is not right, either. To ignore its impact on the way we communicate, and work, and write (and read) is to miss an entire world of literacy shaping the lives of our students. I am fine with technology and media put on the backburner in this book -- which is a great read and perfect for inquiry into the Common Core -- but we need to make more inroads in classrooms around the changing nature of literacy.
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.

What I appreciate the most about the book Pathways is that Calkins and crew did not tackle the whole world. They stuck to English/Language Arts, including the relationship to content area, and did NOT enter into media and technology.

I am weary of those who claim technology is the solution for the Common Core. I have yet to see or read of even one researched example where poor instruction or even lack of instruction was improved by adding technology.

Pathways helped me better understand basic instructional practices that need to be supported. Best practices and knowledge of learning targets in English / Language Arts will help more teachers understand the depth of changes that will be required for implementation of the Common Core. With those shifts, ultimately both media and technology will be stronger assets in the learning process for all students!
