I had a column of mine run in the local newspaper yesterday, as I explained the rationale behind our continued teaching of Three Cups of Tea, in light of the controversies behind the book and Greg Mortenson. The column was partially spurred on by some questions from our School Committee about why we would still be teaching this book, and partially because this particularly column in our local newspaper is a place to feature teacher/writers from the Western Massachusetts Writing Project (although others do periodically write).

So cool that you responded in the paper, Kevin! And, on an unrelated note, what do you use to create your podcasts? I haven’t ever tried podcasting, but I’m thinking it might be fun with my students and want to start looking into it.
I use a variety but the easiest to use is Vocaroo. No registration and it kicks out a link and embed code.

This was a fabulous way to get the most out of an unfortunate situation! I also fell in love with the idea of “Three Cups of Tea” when I was introduced to the Listen to the Wind Picture Book written based on this story. Like you, after being so energized by this story, I felt betrayed by the exposure of the shortcomings of Greg Mortenson. But, also, like you, I was willing to focus on the good message that had been started through a grass roots sort of movement. I wanted to forgive him for his human nature and celebrate the good. Thanks for this post.
