Slice of Life/SmallPoems Day 22 (branch/songs)

(I am participating in the March Slice of Life challenge via the Two Writing Teachers site.  Slice of Life is the idea of noticing the small moments. I have been a participant for many years and each year, I wonder if I will have the energy to write every day. This year, I am going to try to coincide it with my daily poetry writing, and intend to compose small poems on small moments. We’ll see how it goes …)

Day Twenty Two

Listen:
the trees are singing;
the Spring winds are
bringing stress-fractured
songs to the wood,
the creaking sounds
of the forest in motion

Note: On a long walk yesterday, the wind kicked up as a change in weather moved in. What we noticed were the sounds of the tree branches, creaking and groaning. It seemed to our ears as if one would start, and then another would add in from a distance, as if the branches were doing a call/response.

I turned some ideas about the forest songs into a piece of music: TreeSong

Peace (listening for it),
Kevin

  1. This is beautiful, Kevin. “the creaking sounds/of the forest in motion” feels layered with meaning. I wrote today about noticing moments to celebrate in nature, and this feels like one of them.

    • Maybe it’s time to get back to the Slice of Life original focus — the smallest of moments … hard to do when the wider focus on the news, stats, updates, are all so overwhelming …

    • Hi Amanda .. thanks for taking time to read and write … the music is odd, as I was trying to capture some of the chaos and beauty of the wood sounds … We are fine .. hope you are, too

  2. I could truly “see” and hear the motions of the trees in your music, the wave of rustling as breezes blow past. I am so looking forward to a casual stroll around the neighborhood today, thanks to the many posts I’m reading about time in nature. What a gift you’ve given us!

  3. I loved rereading the poem as I listened. About to go out for a walk … I will be listening differently – thank you.
