Slice of Life/Day in a Sentence: I Am So (not) Insulted

(The Slice of Life Challenge in March is hosted by Two Writing Teachers as way to encourage teachers-as-writers. You can join in, if you want. There is also a monthly call for Slices on Tuesdays. You can write then, too)

I laughed, and then she laughed, and then we all laughed as the insult generator landed on a particularly funny Shakespearean phrase that she expertly lobbed my way with her voice, cushioned first by a heartfelt apology not even necessary.

Peace (from the classroom),
Kevin

  1. One lovely sentence has connected me to moments in my own classroom, belly laughs and all.

  2. Ahhh- the power of laughter. And also the power of a well-crafted sentence!

In my writing class, I was asked to pick out my favorite sentence in one of my chapters. It was hard because sometimes, I didn’t think as much as I should have about the unit of a sentence. I love this approach, Kevin!

  3. When I was in an elementary resource classroom, we would display our well-crafted sentences on sentence strips, placed on the cupboard doors. This one sentence tells us so much about the climate of your classroom and the relationship you have with your students!

  4. Your slice reminds me of the series Alvin Ho. The protagonist, who is riddled with anxiety, hurls insults in Shakespearean verse when nervous. I read aloud the first of the series to my class they loved it. I had fun when a verse appeared

  5. There’s an insult generator out there? Kind of reminds me of the WTF weather app that generates random statements about how messed up the weather is.

  6. An insult generator?! Is that even something we need? I love your day in a sentence. I may be trying that one day this month.

  7. Those are so fun! Especially when expertly lobbed. No wonder everyone was laughing. I checked yours out. Your face isn’t worth a sunburn! Ha! That’s a great one!
