Slice of Life/Day in a Sentence: Building A Nest In What’s Left

(The Slice of Life Challenge in March is hosted by Two Writing Teachers as way to encourage teachers-as-writers. You can join in, if you want. There is also a monthly call for Slices on Tuesdays. You can write then, too)

We left the Christmas wreath hanging on the front door up a bit too long, as a sort of silent protest against the Pandemic, so two beautiful cardinals took advantage, burrowing down and building a nest in what’s left of last winter’s celebration.

Peace (in Spring),
Kevin

  1. Lovely! I am so happy the cardinal family have extended the life of the wreath even longer. I bet that’s a beautiful site. You have written a powerful story in one sentence today!

After I took my Christmas tree down, I put up an epiphany tree, which is a tiny bare-branched tree covered with lights because Epiphany was on January 6th this year, and I’m leaving it up as a reminder that we need more truth unveiled. https://www.instagram.com/p/CJxcRmSFwfg/

  2. There’s such a powerful metaphor here, and in the midst of the wreckage of my week, I needed to read this. Thank you and enjoy the wonder of those cardinals.

  3. When we did this we had a bird come in the house because we didn’t know it was nesting in the wreath. It provided me with a story for modeling realistic fiction for my 2nd graders.

  4. That visual in my mind – cardinals nesting in your Christmas wreath – is stunning. I hope you don’t mind that I am jealous.

  5. I love the metaphor in “building a nest in what’s left of last winter’s celebration”. Such a lovely image of renewal!
