Slice of Life/Day in a Poem (Day 5): An Idea At Rest Stays At Rest

(This is for the Slice of Life challenge, hosted by Two Writing Teachers. We write on Tuesdays about the small moments in the larger perspective and then all through March — every single day  …  You write, too.)

Driving home, Friday:

my attention is broken
by an errant basketball
sitting still and abandoned
on the double yellow
dividing lines

Not a person in sight,
as my mind imagines
the possibilities of play,
an idea at rest stays at rest,
finding refuge at the end
of another long day

Peace (in observation),
Kevin

  1. I am the kind of person who always has to make up an explanation for anything I cannot immediately understand. I wonder what happened there…

  2. Love the image of that “errant basketball” and all the possibilities for story that come from it. As usual, your poem has me thinking. Thanks for sharing!

  3. I love the line about a resting idea. An idea at rest stays at rest… that seems like a line that you could REALLY write off of. What happens when that idea gets a nudge. The possibility of play?
